Shading in the simplist explaination is lighting effects. Shading is very easy to do, but it is not for the editor who wants to rush threw and get his av done and over with. If you look at most of the avatar contests, you'll notice that the avs that usually win use lighting effects used on them, shading is very impressive and makes the av, art really stand out. There are a few different styles of shading, but they are all done about the same way. Im just going to show you the most popular style of shading, which was started by an editor on palace I beleive her name was/is Monica, I dont know much about her except she is/was a professional artist.
Ok lets start simple and easy. Lets start out with shading a simple mid part of a paper doll. Using outward shading. (Outward shading- The lighting effect that makes the center of the object you're drawing look like it's comming out tords you, because it is the lightest color, and the sides look to be further away because they are darker). Follow the steps below to see exactly what I mean.
First we get rid of the existing crappy shading (No offense d~mentia) that comes along with a normal pd skin color. Use flood/fill to do this. Hold "Control" in palace to sample the lighter skin color on/for the leg, and flood/fill the darker skin tone with the lighter skin color/tone.
Now we put just one line of a dark shade of skin tone on the outline of this piece. Once your done putting down the one line of the darkest shade, goto the lighter tone. Look below.
| Base skin color | First shade is located here | Second | Third |

Now just go for the next lighter color.
Keep going
Your pretty much done, ok ok ok, go ahead take the extra credit. Make polka dots, it adds sorta tan'ish smoothness to the skin.
Done with outward shading.
Inward shading is usually used for about two things, showing a great light source behind the avatar, and or to show a depression in the av. To put it in english, outward shading makes things look puffy, and inward shading makes things look like a dent. With outward, along the black outline of the avatar you start with the darkest shade to the brightest shade, whereas with inward, along the black outline you start with the lightest instead of the darkest, and work from lightest shade to darkest. Look below for an example of what I mean.
Another lil thing I did to it is called diffusion which (If im correct) means as things get further away they get darker, look at the stars around the moon, from the top of the av to the bottom, they get closer together and darker.
This next type of shading I like to call gold stripping, because i've seen this used in some fantasy pd clothes/outfits, and it's usually done in thin strips, like on the ends of frilly avs, not to mention jewelry. In essence all it is, is just shading, but you keep going on and on. Look below to see a few examples of what I mean, then I'll show you how to do it.
What I want you to notice in the image above is of how the shading is like, light to dark, light to dark and light to dark, its repeated over and over. The image below should be self explainatory, of how to do gold srtipping.
Please understand gold stipping can be done with any color it doesent particularly matter whic you use.
